Pompeii and me

After reading Mary Beard's "Life in a Roman town" I consumed everything I could find about Pompeii. Its fate and that of all it's citizens. The information garnered from the ruins was so fascinating.

I've always loved history and read extensively about World War two as a child. When I moved to Ireland, learning its history was a must.

One day I was looking at holidays. Not for the sun or seaside, definitely not any ski slopes but maybe some interesting architecture...

I was delighted to find a trip to Pompeii and the Sorrento Peninsular. It was a escorted tour which as a single woman suited me. The cost was quite high but I had savings and decided to go for it.

I had a wonderful time, falling in love with Italy, and appreciating the fantastic tour guide and my fellow travellers.

The highlight of course was Pompeii, somewhere I knew quite well. From its rituals & organisation. Brothels and baths. God's and food stalls. As I soaked up the sense of history, pinching myself at how lucky I felt, it was incredible.

A dream come true...
